Product Review

Outstanding Refrigerator!

by   jroftoledo ,   Mar 1, 2005

Pros:  Big! Can see everything in your frig. Very high quality.

Cons:  Expensive! Would like stainless handles instead of black plastic - especially at that price.

The Bottom Line:  Looking for a high quality, large capacity counter depth frig? This one is for you.

Overall Rating: 5/5 stars

Author's Review

My exhaustive on line and in store research paid off. My unit was delivered this past Saturday. While it is far too early to judge how it holds up over time, I can tell you that I am very comfortable knowing that I made the right decision.

There is a tremendous amount of space in both the frig and the freezer. I love the fact that I can open either door and see everything in the fresh or frozen compartments. Especially on the fresh side - with the multi-tier lighting and the clear glass shelves and bins, you can see everything in the frig.

I tried out the "Ice Magic" and "Quick Cool" features. Both work very well. The Quick Cool function is designed for use when you put a large amount of food in the unit - such as a major grocery shopping trip. It drops the freezer temp down to -6 and the frig down to 34 from their normal 0 and 37 respective settings. The Ice Magic feature is designed for use during heavy ice demands such as a party. It REALLY puts out the ice when in this setting. The unit runs VERY quietly. When I turned off the Ice Magic and Quick Cool functions (Quick cool will actually turn itself off after 24 hours and revert to the factory settings of 0 and 37), the unit ran even quieter.

The fit and finish of this frig are top notch - as they should be for a $2,800 refrigerator! There are three large, removable, place-them-where-you-like compartment bins for the frig door. All three will hold gallon size containers. There is one small and shallow bin for lower down on the door that will accommodate such things as bottles of wine (or a box of wine). I do wish there were two of these drawers but I suppose I can order an extra.

Each of the three larger door bins also has a no skid "mat" that fits in the bottom of the bin to keep items such as glass jars from sliding around when you open and close the door. This is a very nice touch.

The vegetable and fresh fruit bins are very large and will hold a great deal of fruit and produce. The deli drawer also holds a considerable amount of food. These are features I found lacking on other cabinet depth refrigerators. In many cabinet depth units, the bins are so small as to be virtually worthless. This frig is built to hold food!

The freezer compartment is equally as accommodating. It has two enamel coated wire shelves that can be adjusted/removed very easily. It has two wire bins on full extension rails and a somewhat smaller bin at the bottom that extends about 2/3 of the way out. You can stuff quite a bit of frozen food in these. There are two smaller tilt out bins on the freezer door. I didn't think these would hold much but, to my surprise, i can get 3 or 4 bags of frozen veggies in each. There is also a fixed position door bin toward the bottom of the freezer door.

The ice bin is moved out onto the freezer door which gives you more space in the freezer. Lastly, there is a small, narrow shelf in front of the ice bin that could accommodate a package of hot dogs. However, it is designed to hold the re-usable ice pack included with the frig.

The outside of the unit is just as nice. The filtered, chilled water and ice dispensers work very well. My first experience owning a frig with this feature. The ice dispensing is quite noisy but, when you think about it, how could it not be? One tip: keep your glass up close to the ice dispensing chute to minimize "flying ice crystals."

I was originally skeptical of the water filter being mounted at floor level. Many units have the filters inside the frig. But, as pointed out by the salesperson, mounting outside the frig means no moving food out of the way to change the filter and, in all units I saw, the filter does take up some space when mounted inside. The filter couldn't be easier to remove. Simply press the button to the left of the filter which causes the filter to "pop out." Then pull the filter straight out. Installing the new filter causes the lock/release button to return to the lock position. Very simple.

The leveling process is pretty straightforward as well. All four leveling "legs" can be adjusted from the front of the unit (at floor level) with a 3/8" (not 1/2" like the manual claims) socket wrench. You have to remove the grill cover to get to these level adjustment bolts. Removing the cover the first time was quite a chore but, once you learn how it attaches (spring clips), the next time will be easier.

I hope I've covered the most important items for you.

BTW- Regarding the price paid: this unit was on sale at Sears for $2,699.99. Sears "price matched" Lowe's everyday price of $2,597.00 plus 10% of the difference.
