Author's Review
Working in IT and being familiar with Linksys routers and their setup software made me choose this product for a remote office client that needed to run a few IP phones to the main office and use wireless connection for his sales force.
Setup was a breeze, even the VPN connection part and being familiar with Linksys router firmware made it even easier for me.
This unit has a lot of features - VPN, 10 IPSec, QoS which is needed for VoIP phones, Firewall, Wireless IEEE 802.11g/b, 2 antennas with a signal booster. It seemed like a dream come true for the price, but it was far away from it.
Things started looking a bit ominous when I saw that the firmware pages had extensions ending in .asp. This is a sign that some form or shape of Microsoft programming is onboard, which when it comes to hardware makes me more but uneasy, as my experience in IT server management has shown me. So sure enough - after about half and hour I am getting the following problems - when the router is hit by a bit mnore than light traffic, connections as say 5 VoIP phones and 3 wireless clients all hell breaks loose. The router starts dropping wireless connections intermittently. No matter what settings the cust. support suggested things would remain the same. I am on the Firmware Version: 1.0.32.2. I was made aware by tech. support at Linksys that there is a newer hardware patch in beta, which is 1.0.37. I will try that and see if it solves my issues, if not - this unit is going to the trash bin.
Now - lets talk about the cust. support. Most of the time I deal with Linksys tech support via chat - relatively short time to connect to a person and you won't have to translate from their "English". All of their tech. support is outsourced and has a bit of a problem with US English, even though their names might be "John" or "Andy", you can't help but smile and want to ask them about their real name. They are friendly, I'll give them that. Wait time is astronomical. In order to get to a real tech person (Tier 2 support) and not someone that just read off of a manual it takes about 30 minutes, then you're on hold probably for another 20 more. You better enjoy soft jazz cause otherwise you'd want to poke your eyes out...
I would not recommend this product or the support I got for it in any shape or form.
UPDATE: After wrangling with cust support for a while I received firmware upgrade to 1.37 (originally ships with firmware 1.32). This version fixed the wireless issues but now VPN tunneling has become unstable.
UPDATE: After yet another patch VPN has become stable but Vista machines drop the wireless connections intermittently. The office that bought this removed wireless connectivity from the router's setup, works good now but not in the capacity intended.
