Volkswagens Cabrio convertible has been carried over basically unchanged for 2002. It is again available in three models: GL, GLS, and GLX. All three are powered by a 115-hp transversely mounted four-cylinder coupled with a five-speed manual transmission. A four-speed automatic is available at extra cost. All Cabrios are equipped with front and side-impact airbags, ABS brakes, side-impact door beams, and a roll bar. An AM/FM cassette stereo is standard, with a six-disc CD changer available as a dealer accessory. The GL and GLS models feature a manually operated convertible top, while the GLX receives a power top. The GLX is also equipped with leather upholstery, front fog lamps, and aluminum alloy wheels. The revamped Jetta will get a longer wheelbase and a wider track, but the styling isn't likely to differ much from the current version. Pros: Improved interior space and quality, optional #2 package, handling.
Cons: Engine is only adequate, almost $27,000.
The Bottom Line: The new Jetta isn't a bad car, however until VW improves its base engine, $27,000 is too much moo-la for this vehicle.

Pros: Interior materials, high feature content, German feel, off-the-line grunt, seat comfort, cargo volume
Cons: Styling, tepid performance, mediocre fuel economy, reliability concerns
The Bottom Line: The appeal of luxury-class interior materials and feature content is dulled by Toyota styling and un-Toyota reliability concerns.

At last January's Detroit auto show a few cars really surprised me. On the positive side, a couple of new cars from Saturn will actually be desirable. I very much look forward to driving them. Then there was the totally redesigned VW Jetta.
